Go Eat Worms! by R.L. Stine

Go Eat Worms! The title echoes the words of Regina Barstow who is sick and tired of all her brother Todd's practical jokes with worms. Todd has collected worms for years and plans to win the computer prize at the school Science Expo with his worm house display. All is going well, until along comes the new kid, Patrick, who tells him outrightly that he has pinched his idea about worms for the expo and that he  has something exceptional planned. Todd is furious, and along with his friend, Danny, plots to find out about Patrick's project. One day whilst annoying Regina with worms yet again down in the basement of his house, Todd decides to cut one in half as shock value, but as Regina points out, the worms in his tank are watching! Now it seems they want their revenge. Todd's life becomes a nightmare and it seems that worms are plaguing him at every turn. This is a fast moving book following the usual cliff hanging chapter style of R.L. Stine. I read it in one sitting.

The Night Walkers by Otto Coonz

Gulls are dropping out of the sky, dead, Cecil the local tip attendant has mysteriously disappeared and, now Nora's neighbour Martin Craven is suddenly ill and stays in a darkened room away from the light.  Mr Craven's housekeeper, Mrs Cribbins knows something is wrong after Martin tries to attack her and infect her with his soul-destroying illness, but no-one will believe an old lady.  After visiting Marty, Nora's brother Tony starts exhibiting the same symptoms and is taken to hospital. Nora suspects that this mysterious infection afflicting many of the children in Covendale is something far more sinister than just a virus. But no-one will listen to her, not even her parents. So with the help of her friend Max, she sets out to rid the town of this evil.  This book came about because of author, Coontz's concern for environment protection. Despite it's environmentalist bent, it is a gripping read. I read it in one sitting. If you like horror or adventure, give this one a go. I think I'll have to now get hold of his more well-known novel called Isle of the Shapeshifters.

The Boy Who Ate Fear Street by R.L. Stine

Sam is a fussy eater, he only eats food that is white. Now this includes food like macaroni cheese, milk, vanilla ice-cream and rice pudding just to give a few examples. But suddenly he finds himself eating sponges and dish washing liquid, glue, and he is even craving dog food and can't keep his hands off the autumn leaves. Sam believes it is all Kevin and Lissa's Aunt Silvia's fault. I mean she is very eccentric and is some kind of witch doctor, or so  it seems. But there is something even stranger about Sam and his family. I didn't see it coming, please let me know if you did. I must admit I am kind of hooked on these Goosebumps books now. The book collection in the cauldron under the phone that never stops ringing is growing week by week.

The Haunted Mask II by R.L.Stine

Steve Boswell is not happy about having to coach the grade one soccer team as punishment for releasing a squirrel in the girls' locker room. He says they are nothing but animals! His best friend, Chuck, hasn't exactly been helpful either. Anyway, Halloween is fast approaching and Steve wants to have the scariest outfit in town. He wants a mask like the one Carly Beth had last year which had everyone running for their lives. So he decides to purchase one from the store where she bought hers. The only trouble is that the store is no longer open for business so he steals one from the basement; a creepy old man mask with stringy hair and spiders bursting from the ears. However, this evil mask start to suffocate him and take over his body. Check out the video clip below to find out a bit about the horrors that await Steve:

Hell's Gully & Night of the Vooddoo Doll by Paul Collins

Hi Jye, I dug deep into my resources and I think I have something you haven't read from the Shivers Series. It is two books in one. In Night of the Voodoo Doll Mardi has been given a Mumbo T-shirt with two smouldering eyes, and her sister has just given her the weirdest doll ever, a voodoo doll and she is about to go to bed...In Hell's Gully there's a blackberry bramble, looks pretty innocent except when you take a bite of a blueberry you get more than a nasty skin rash!

Monster Blood II by R.L.Stine

Hey Jye...read this one yet? How could anyone not like a book that has "monster blood" in it? This book is full of R.L. Stine's trademark suspense and kid-friendly horror. Evan Ross, the main character, can't stop thinking about Monster Blood and all that happened last summer. It was just so terrifyingly horrible! Even Evan's science teacher doesn't believe him and now he has to clean out the hamster's cage as punishment for making up stories. Then, his friend, Andy, arrives in town and things go from bad to worse…

UPDATE: Jye just informed me he has read all the Goosebumps series...hmmm I will come up with something.

Deadly! Brats by Paul Jennings & Morris Gleitzman

This little book is number 2 in the series called Deadly but could be read without the others. I believe all of the six stories are available in one volume now. When Amy arrives home for her birthday tea, her parents have vanished and in their place is a baby she's never seen before. At around the same time Sprocket wakes up naked on a deserted mountainside and realises that he has lost his memory. Both kids set out on journeys to find the people they belong to, little knowing that they will soon join forces and embark, with the baby, on the deadliest quest of their lives We also have books 1, 4,5, and 6 in the Little Library of Rescued Books.

The Ghost Comes Calling by Betty Ren Wright

This novel is full of suspense and a great read for upper primary students. Author, Wright, revitalizes the story of the mean ghost who cannot rest. Chad Weldon likes the shabby log cabin his dad has bought on the lake. Then his bossy friend Jeannie informs him that the shack is haunted by the old man who built it. Apparently he died with a bitter grudge against the whole town, and he doesn't want anyone in his house. Slowly, in time-honoured fashion, the ghost gets closer and closer. First Chad feels him lurking in the woods, then he hears the eerie howl of the ghost's dog. Later, a grey scowling face appears at the window and a claw-like hand. Finally, Chad finds the confidence to go beyond Jeannie and put right the wrong done to the old man long before. The contrast between the safe and cosy domestic world and the ghostly disorder intensifies the pleasure of the story. Wright picks up our fear of the rustle in the bushes, the strange shadows on the porch and the spooky atmosphere inside and outside the house.

Welcome to Camp Nightmare by R.L.Stine

All of those scary stories about camp are all coming true. The food is terrible and the counsellors are very strange. The camp director, Uncle Al, is turning out to be demented. But that’s alright, Billy believes he can handle all of that but then suddenly his friends start to disappear. What is going on? His parents don’t answer his letters, and there is something lurking after dark. Camp Nightmoon might as well be called Camp Nightmare! This is one for Jye or maybe, Lucinda.

Paul Jenning's Spookiest Stories by Paul Jennings

The author Paul Jennings is a former teacher and university lecturer who believes that kids who don't like to read are just disinterested. To prove it, he came up with an approach that appeals to even the most reluctant reader. This book, like his other collations of stories won't disappoint. This anthology boasts twenty of Paul's spookiest, fun-filled yarns, hand picked by Paul himself from his 'UN' collection. Below is a link to Paul talking about himself and his suburb:

Mind Master by Clive Gifford

Clive Gifford is an award-winning author of more than fifty books on the subjects of sports and soccer. In this novel the main character, Peter, is hooked on arcade games, so when a new game appears, he can't wait to try it. Little does he realise that it will trap him endlessly in time, locked in the game to which there is only one right answer. A great novel for 9-12 year olds. The books is part of the Usborne Spinechillers Series if you are after more scary reading. To find out more about this author, click on the following link:

Camp Fear by Carol Ellis

Published in 1993 this book is very American and could classified as a thriller or even horror. It is probably best for a mature reader but is not too over the top as far as the action goes. The prologue begins with the discovery of a body at Camp Silverlake. Then it moves forward in time when eight new counsellors begin preparations for the arrival of the children. Some of the counsellors had actually attended this camp years ago when they were younger. Now seven years on something is haunting them and turning each of their fears into reality. Turns out that the past can't hurt you but it could kill you. The plot is a little predictable but it moves along at a speedy pace. Below is a link to a list of all her other publications:
